Coogan’s Bluff is a sandstone and urban promontory on the Manhattan side of the Harlem River whose slope overlooks the river and nearby athletic grounds. The bluff became well known in the 19th and 20th centuries because of its visual relationship to nearby stadiums.
Historically it provided informal vantage points where spectators could view events at the adjacent sports grounds. Today the area is integrated into public parkland and streetscapes with paths and viewpoints that look across the river.
The bluff took its name from a local landowner and developed as part of the changing urban fabric of northern Manhattan over the 19th and 20th centuries, including transportation and recreational uses.
Geographically it sits on the western edge of Harlem/Washington Heights overlooking the Harlem River, close to where the former Polo Grounds and later stadium sites stood.
