Concertgebouw, Amsterdam

The Royal Concertgebouw in Amsterdam is a late 19th-century concert hall renowned for its exceptional acoustics and for housing the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra; it opened in 1888.

The principal attraction is the large main auditorium, which seats close to 2,000 people and hosts symphony concerts, solo recitals and seasonal programs by the resident orchestra. Smaller halls stage chamber music and recitals, and the building regularly features international guest artists and conductors.

Built in the 1880s to meet Amsterdam’s growing musical life, the Concertgebouw has been central to Dutch cultural life since its inauguration and has maintained continuous use as a major concert venue into the present.
