Concepción (volcano)

Concepción is a steep, symmetrical stratovolcano that forms the northern cone of Ometepe island in Lake Nicaragua. It rises to roughly 1,600 metres and presents a near-perfect conical silhouette above the lake.

The volcano is popular with experienced hikers who attempt guided ascents to the summit crater along steep, often muddy trails; lower slopes are cultivated in places and feature forested sections. Boat access from mainland ports brings visitors to Ometepe’s ferry towns such as Moyogalpa.

Geologically active throughout the Holocene, Concepción has produced eruptions in historical times and is monitored for volcanic activity; visitors should check local advisories before planning climbs. The volcano sits in Rivas Department and dominates the island landscape.
