Colorado National Monument protects a high desert canyon landscape of steep-walled canyons, monoliths and sculpted sandstone near Grand Junction, Colorado. The monument showcases red- and tan-colored rock formations cut by tributaries of the Colorado River.
A paved scenic drive along the canyon rim provides multiple overlooks and trail access to view the rock towers and canyons, while a network of trails reaches down into side canyons and across the rim. The park is used for hiking, climbing and scenic driving.
The most recognizable feature is a tall sandstone tower known as Independence Monument, which rises above the canyon floor and is a common subject for photographs and climbing. The monument’s geology records uplift and erosion of Colorado Plateau rocks over millions of years.
The monument lies on the Colorado Plateau on the western edge of Colorado, just south of the city of Grand Junction and near the town of Fruita. The area consists of canyon rims, mesas and high desert vegetation.

How to Get to Colorado National Monument #
Colorado National Monument sits on the high plateau just west of Grand Junction, Colorado. By car it’s roughly a 10‑minute to 20‑minute drive (about 8-12 miles) from downtown Grand Junction: take I‑70 to the Grand Junction area and follow local signs to Colorado National Monument / Rim Rock Drive and the Visitor Center. Rim Rock Drive (Monument Canyon Road) is the scenic route through the monument; parking is available at the visitor center and pullouts along the drive. There is no regular public transit into the monument itself - the nearest bus service is in Grand Junction, so expect a short drive from town.
Tips for Visiting Colorado National Monument #
- Drive Rim Rock Drive at either sunrise or late afternoon for the best light on the canyons and cooler temperatures; those hours also cut the number of tour buses on the road.
- Enter at the Saddlehorn Visitor Center (the main/west entrance near Fruita) to pick up maps and start the scenic drive-this gives easy access to the most popular overlooks and short trailheads.
- Many visitors stop only at the big overlooks; don't miss the short hikes (for example Window Rock and Monument Canyon) that leave the rim and offer quieter canyon-floor views and better wildlife chances during early morning.
