Monserrate

A prominent mountain ridge overlooking Bogotá, Monserrate rises to roughly 3,152 meters above sea level and is crowned by a historic shrine. It is one of the citys best-known religious and viewpoint sites.

Panoramic views over Bogotá from several lookout points, the summit church, cafes and restaurants draw both pilgrims and tourists. The site is accessed by a funicular, a cable car and a steep pedestrian trail, and typical visits last a few hours.

The hilltop shrine dates back to the colonial era and has been an active pilgrimage destination for centuries; it has been expanded and maintained over time to serve religious visitors and tourists. The transport infrastructure was added later to provide regular public access.

Monserrate sits on the eastern rim of the Bogotá savanna within Bogotá D.C., forming the eastern skyline of the city. It is adjacent to the urban area, with summit facilities visible from much of central Bogotá.

• Altitude: The summit sits at about 3,152 meters above sea level, so expect noticeably cooler temperatures than Bogotá's city center and allow time for acclimatization if arriving from low altitude.
• Getting there: Access by funicular or cable car is the easiest way up for most visitors; the pilgrimage trail is steep and can take 45-90 minutes depending on pace.
