Claros
Archaeological Site Ancient Ionian sanctuary and oracle site near İzmir
An Ionian sanctuary near Izmir, Claros preserves remains of an ancient temple and oracle to Apollo; archaeology visitors come for column ruins, inscriptions and sea views across the plain.
Claros (Klaros) is an ancient Greek sanctuary and oracle of Apollo located on the Aegean coast of what is now İzmir Province in western Turkey. The site was one of the principal Ionian cult centres for Apollo and functioned as a place of prophecy in antiquity.
Ruins at the site include remains of the temple precinct, foundation platforms and scattered architectural fragments that indicate a long sequence of construction and rebuilding. Visitors survey the temple podium, some columns and the layout of the sanctuary while interpreting the remaining masonry and excavation finds.
Claros was active from the Archaic and Classical periods through the Hellenistic and Roman eras as a religious and prophetic centre. The sanctuary’s influence and wealth rose and fell with regional political changes, and the site later fell into disuse and ruin before modern archaeological work documented the remains.
The sanctuary sits on a raised coastal location in İzmir Province overlooking the Aegean, between the ancient Ionic cities of the western Anatolian coast and accessible from regional roads that lead to the archaeological area.
- Long-used oracle site: The sanctuary served as a pan-Ionian oracle of Apollo and was visited from the Archaic through the Roman periods for divination and ritual activity.
