How to Get to Ciudad Tecún Umán
Ciudad Tecún Umán is primarily a border crossing town. Many travellers arrive from Tapachula (Mexico) by bus or taxi and then cross on foot or by local taxi into Guatemala. Expect simple local transport and variable schedules.
Tapachula International Airport (TAP) / La Aurora (GUA): Ciudad Tecún Umán sits on Guatemala’s border with Mexico (across the Suchiate River from Ciudad Hidalgo). The closest international airport on the Mexican side is Tapachula (TAP) - from TAP you can travel by bus or taxi to the border (journey ~30-60 minutes). Guatemala City’s La Aurora (GUA) is much farther and usually involves a long overland bus trip.
Border crossings: Many travellers arrive overland from Tapachula or other Chiapas towns; cross the Puente Rodolfo Robles on foot or by local taxi after completing immigration checks at both sides of the border.
Note: cross-border transport and services change frequently; check schedules and entry requirements before travelling.
Train: There is no regular international passenger rail service between Tapachula and Tecún Umán.
Bus: Local and regional buses run to the border town from Tapachula, from across the Guatemalan interior and from nearby Mexican towns. Fares on the Mexican side and local Guatemalan colectivos are low (a few dollars or less) but schedules vary; taxis are a faster, more direct option for border transfers. On the Guatemalan side, local buses and tuk-tuks serve short onward journeys from the border crossing into Tecún Umán and surrounding towns.
