Ciudad Perdida, also known as Teyuna or the Lost City, is an archaeological site in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia that was built by an indigenous culture predating the Spanish conquest. The city consists of terraces, plazas and stone paths set into the mountain rainforest and is one of Colombia’s most important pre-Columbian sites.

The principal site includes a central plaza surrounded by terraces and stone stairways; the stonework and layout indicate a significant regional ceremonial and administrative centre. The site fell out of regular use before and during the early colonial period and was re-discovered in the 20th century by local communities and archaeologists.

Access to Ciudad Perdida is by foot along a designated jungle trail that requires several days of trekking, river crossings and camping; the route is managed in cooperation with local indigenous groups who provide guiding services and regulate visitor numbers.

The site sits on a ridge in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta massif above the Caribbean lowlands and is reached from coastal towns on the Magdalena Department and surrounding access points.

What to See#

• Main terrace and plaza: Main Terrace and Plaza - the central paved plaza and surrounding terraces of the city proper, with remnant stone stairways and platforms that formed the urban core.
• Terraces and burials: Burial terraces and settlement terraces - stepped stone terraces built into the mountainside that supported dwellings and funerary contexts across the site.
• Access route and camps: Riverside camps and river crossing points - sections of the trekking route and campgrounds along rivers that provide the standard approach route to the ruins, used by local guides and visitors.

All visitors must join an organized trek departing from Santa Marta or nearby towns. Treks are 4-6 days and include guides, permits, and often local meals; transport to the trailheads is provided by operators.

• Book with a registered Indigenous guide or agency - Ciudad Perdida treks are organized through local Tayrona-authorized cooperatives.
• Prepare for 4-6 days of strenuous hiking with river crossings and steep stone steps; pack light and bring good footwear.
• Acclimatize in Santa Marta for a day or two, and ensure vaccinations and travel insurance include evacuation in case of emergencies.
