Citadel of Erbil
Archaeological Site Ancient fortified mound at Erbil's historic core
An ancient mound in Erbil’s old city with Ottoman and earlier layers, the Citadel contains restored houses, a local museum and panoramic views over the Kurdish capital.
The Citadel of Erbil is an ancient fortified mound at the historic centre of Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, notable as one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlement sites in the world. The citadel dominates the city skyline and is a major archaeological and cultural landmark.
A compact elevated mound containing narrow streets, historic houses and defensive structures that reflect many periods of occupation; some restored houses and exhibition spaces present the citadel’s urban history. The surrounding lower bazaar area and city fabric integrate the citadel into the living urban centre.
Occupied for several millennia, the citadel developed through successive civilizations and was used as an administrative and residential centre over long historical periods. In the 20th and 21st centuries the site underwent evacuation and conservation work to stabilise and restore buildings and to present the archaeological sequence.
Sitting at the heart of modern Erbil, the citadel occupies a raised tell in the city centre and is readily visible from surrounding districts.
- Mound and Urban Setting: The citadel occupies a prominent mound in the centre of the modern city, identifiable by its elliptical fortified tell and surrounding lower bazaars at the foot of the mound.
- Antiquity: Archaeological layers date back several millennia and the site is recognised as one of the oldest continually inhabited settlement mounds in the region.
