Cinquantenaire
Park Public park in Brussels dominated by triumphal arch
Brussels park and triumphal arch built for Belgium’s 50th anniversary; home to museums including the Royal Military and Autoworld collections. Visitors stroll the park, visit museum exhibits and photograph the arch and colonnades.
Cinquantenaire is a large public park and monumental complex in eastern Brussels centred on a triumphal arch and long esplanade. The site combines open parkland with imposing late 19th- and early 20th-century neoclassical buildings that house several national museums.
The central triple arch serves as the focal point and is flanked by colonnaded wings that contain museum galleries. The park area is used for leisure, events, and as an approach to the museum buildings.
The park and arcade complex were created as a commemorative project in the late 19th century under royal patronage to mark Belgian national anniversaries and was developed with the intention of creating a grand public space and museum precinct. The buildings and arch were completed in stages and later adapted to accommodate museum collections.
Cinquantenaire is located in the eastern part of central Brussels, within walking distance of the European Quarter and accessible by tram and metro. The park provides open green space in an otherwise dense urban area.
- Origins: The complex was developed on royal initiative as a commemorative park and features a prominent triple arch that is visible from afar in eastern Brussels.
