Church Square, Pretoria

Church Square is the historic civic square at the centre of Pretoria, South Africa, dating to the 19th century and long the city’s administrative and judicial core.

The square is dominated by a bronze statue of President Paul Kruger and is bounded by late 19th- and early 20th-century public buildings that form its characteristic streetscape. It functions as a pedestrian focal point for sightseeing, guided walks and civic commemorations.

The space developed alongside Pretoria’s growth in the 19th century and became the city’s commercial and judicial centre. Several notable public buildings were erected on its perimeter to house municipal and court functions.

The square sits within Pretoria’s central business district, about 55 km north of Johannesburg, and is a short walk from other downtown landmarks and government buildings.
