Church of the Holy Apostles
Religious Site Byzantine-era church formerly housing imperial mausoleums
The site of Constantinople’s once‑major imperial church, the Church of the Holy Apostles played a central role in Byzantine burial and ceremony; travelers interested in Byzantine history visit nearby monuments and museum collections tracing that legacy.
The Church of the Holy Apostles was a major Byzantine church in Constantinople originally founded in the 4th century and long regarded as second in importance only to Hagia Sophia. It functioned as an imperial burial church and a key liturgical centre during the Byzantine era.
The church was rebuilt and enlarged at various times in the Byzantine period; notable emperors were interred there, and it housed important relics and mosaics. After the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople the structure was dismantled and its site was later used for Ottoman constructions.
The former church stood in the heart of the ancient city near what is now the historic peninsula of Istanbul; its exact footprint is within the area reconfigured after 1453 and incorporated into later Ottoman urban projects.
