Church of São Francisco

Igreja de São Francisco in Porto is a Gothic church whose interior is famous for extensive Baroque gilt-wood decoration. The building is a major monument in Porto’s historic centre and a listed part of the city’s UNESCO heritage area.

The exterior presents a relatively austere 14th-century Franciscan Gothic façade and nave, while the interior is almost entirely overlaid with gilded woodwork and elaborate altarpieces from the 17th and 18th centuries. Visitors can also see the church’s undercrofts and adjoining museum displays that exhibit ecclesiastical objects and decorative programmes.

Founded by the Franciscan order and constructed in the 14th century, the church acquired its rich Baroque decoration in the 17th and 18th centuries when the interior was covered with carved and gilded woodwork. The complex later incorporated museum displays to protect and interpret its artistic heritage.

Located in Porto’s historic Ribeira quarter, the church lies close to the Douro riverfront and the Palácio da Bolsa, within the city’s UNESCO-listed central area.
