Church of Saint Anne, Jerusalem

The Church of Saint Anne is a Romanesque Crusader-era church situated in the northeastern sector of Jerusalem’s Old City, adjacent to the archaeological Pools of Bethesda. The church dates to the 12th century and is one of the better-preserved Crusader churches in the city.

Architectural highlights include a well-preserved nave and sanctuary in Romanesque style, with stonework and vaulting typical of Crusader construction. The interior is noted for very good natural acoustics and the site remains a destination for religious visitors and for small-scale musical events.

The church was built during the Crusader period and later passed through various hands across succeeding centuries; it underwent conservation and repairs in the modern era to preserve the medieval fabric. Archaeological remains of the adjacent Pools of Bethesda are visible near the church and are associated with New Testament tradition.

The church sits inside the Old City near the Lions’ Gate and the northern edge of the Temple Mount area, immediately beside the Pools of Bethesda archaeological site and within the dense urban fabric of Jerusalem’s historic core.
