The site contains a central civic-ceremonial core with temples and plazas, a ballcourt and numerous causeways, surrounded by widespread residential fields and household architecture covering several square kilometres. The arrangement and density of the remains show Chunchucmil functioned as an important regional centre in the Late Classic Maya period.
Archaeological investigations have documented ceramics, architecture and settlement patterns that date the primary occupation to the Late Classic (roughly AD 600-900) and have highlighted the site’s adaptations to a karstic environment with limited surface water.
