Chowmahalla Palace

Chowmahalla Palace is a historic palace complex in the old city of Hyderabad, Telangana, noted as the former ceremonial seat of the Nizams. The name means “four palaces” and the site is significant for its royal architecture and state rooms.

The complex’s principal highlight is the large ceremonial hall and interconnected courtyards, including formal audience spaces and royal apartments. Architectural highlights include ornate plasterwork, wooden carved doors, and expansive paved courtyards that frame the main buildings.

Construction and enlargement took place under the Asaf Jahi dynasty across the 18th and 19th centuries, when successive Nizams commissioned additions and ornate interiors. Over the 20th and 21st centuries the complex has undergone phased restoration to conserve interiors and facades and to open parts to the public as a museum.

The palace sits within Hyderabad’s historic core in Telangana, India, and is part of the city’s cluster of 18th- and 19th-century civic and royal monuments.
