Chirripó National Park
National Park National park containing Costa Rica's highest peak
High-elevation trails lead through cloud forest to Cerro Chirripó; hikers camp at refuges for multi-day ascents. Visitors come for challenging treks, rare birdwatching, and clear summit views toward both coasts on good weather days.
Chirripó National Park is a high‑elevation protected area in Costa Rica’s Talamanca range that includes the country’s highest mountain. It safeguards páramo-like and montane forest ecosystems and is a key site for endemic highland species.
Hiking to the summit of Cerro Chirripó is the park’s main attraction; the ascent reaches about 3,820 metres and typically takes two days with an overnight at the mountain lodge or campsite. Trails pass through several vegetation zones, offering wide views on clear days that can extend to both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts.
The park was created to protect high-elevation habitats and watersheds and to conserve the unique flora and fauna of the Talamanca highlands. Management and access rules have evolved to control visitor numbers and protect vulnerable alpine environments.
The park sits in the Talamanca mountain chain in southern Costa Rica, within San José Province and bordering other provinces; the usual trailhead is at San Gerardo de Rivas on the park’s slopes.
- Permits and reservations: Overnight hiking permits and camp or mountain lodge reservations are required and subject to quotas, so bookings should be made well in advance.
What to See #
- Cerro Chirripó: The national park contains Cerro Chirripó, the highest peak in Costa Rica at about 3,820 metres, which is the park's principal destination for hikers.
- San Gerardo de Rivas access: Primary access to the summit is via trails that start near the village of San Gerardo de Rivas, where most multi-day treks begin and overnight stays are arranged.
How to Get to Chirripó National Park #
Road and trailhead: Chirripó National Park is reached via the mountain village of San Gerardo de Rivas (the park’s main trailhead for Cerro Chirripó). From San José drive south on the Interamericana/Route 2 toward San Isidro de El General, then follow local mountain roads up to San Gerardo de Rivas.
Distance & hiking: the drive from San José to San Gerardo de Rivas is a multi-hour mountain journey (commonly 4-5 hours depending on route and conditions); from the village the official trailhead and ranger station start the multi-day hike to Cerro Chirripó (no vehicle access to the summit).
Tips for Visiting Chirripó National Park #
- Reserve permits and a bed at the national park refugio well in advance - park access and overnight capacity on the Chirripó Trail (trailhead at San Gerardo de Rivas) are limited and sell out in high season.
- Start the summit push very early (often pre-dawn) from the upper camps or refugio if you want sunrise from the summit; plan logistics so you reach the high camp the day before.
- Avoid weekend crowds by hiking midweek when possible; many Costa Rican hikers and organized groups use weekend slots, so weekdays are noticeably quieter on the trail.
