West Lake
Lake Scenic freshwater lake with historic gardens and pagodas
Hangzhou’s West Lake pairs causeways, pagodas and classical gardens; tourists enjoy boat rides, lakeside tea houses near Longjing tea terraces and promenades that inspired painters and poets for centuries.
West Lake is a freshwater lake in Hangzhou, Zhejiang, famous for its scenic causeways, temples, and classical gardens; it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its influence on garden design. The lake covers roughly 6.5 square kilometers and has been a focus of Chinese landscape arts for centuries.
The lake is framed by tree-lined promenades, historic pagodas, and small islands; key sights include causeways, historic pagodas and classical gardens. Many visitors take short boat trips to view the shoreline from the water and walk the Su Causeway and other lakeside paths. Seasonal highlights include spring blossoms, summer lotus beds and autumn foliage, with many established viewpoints around the shore.
West Lake’s present form developed over many dynasties; major works of embankment and garden construction date from the Tang through the Qing periods. Several historic structures were rebuilt or restored in the 20th and 21st centuries to preserve traditional forms.
The lake sits in central Hangzhou, immediately west of the city’s historic center and a few kilometres from Hangzhou East and West railway stations. The surrounding area is urban with parks and cultural sites lining the shore.
- Best time to visit: Most of the popular boardwalks and causeways are busiest at sunrise and late afternoon; early morning mists are considered especially photogenic.
- Getting around: Boat rides and short ferries connect the lake's islands and offer the clearest full-lake views, while walking the causeways provides close-up views of gardens and temples.
What to See #
- Su Causeway: A raised causeway crossing the lake lined with willow trees and stone bridges, originally constructed in the Song dynasty and commonly used for walking or cycling along the lake's north shore.
- Leifeng Pagoda: A historic octagonal pagoda on the lake's southern bank; the current structure dates from a modern reconstruction and sits near the site of the original Song- and Ming-era pagodas.
- Three Pools Mirroring the Moon: Three small pagoda-like stone towers set on tiny islets that are illuminated at night and form a distinctive reflection feature used in traditional views of the lake.
How to Get to West Lake #
West Lake (Hangzhou) sits in central Hangzhou and is very accessible from the city. From Hangzhou East Railway Station it’s about an 8-10 km drive west (20-30 minutes by taxi); from Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport expect roughly 30-35 km (40-60 minutes by car). The lake is served by local buses and the city metro; once in the West Lake area most sights are a short walk from the nearest stops.
Tips for Visiting West Lake #
- Go at first light or near sunset-these times have far fewer tour groups around the Broken Bridge and Bai Causeway and give the best light for the lake reflections.
- Start at a less popular entry point (for example the north or west shore rather than the Broken Bridge/Hubin area) and cycle or walk a longer loop-this lets you reach quieter spots like Meijiawu tea terraces and the west-lake backwaters.
- Take a short boat to the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon early or late in the day; the on-foot perimeter and small islands get crowded midday with packaged tours, while boats provide a broader, less-clustered view.
Best Time to Visit West Lake #
Best in spring or autumn when temperatures are pleasant and the lake scenery is at its most attractive.
