China Danxia refers to a series of red-sandstone landscapes in China characterised by steep cliffs, pillar-like formations and striking layered colours; the property is a serial World Heritage site inscribed in 2010. The landforms are the result of uplift and subsequent erosion of red-bed sandstones and conglomerates over millions of years.

Typical visitor highlights are panoramic cliff-top viewpoints, natural rock pillars and narrow valleys with vividly coloured strata; many of the sites have short walking trails and boardwalks to reach outlooks. The visual appeal is geological rather than built, and each component presents variations on the Danxia erosion pattern.

The Danxia sites are distributed across several provinces in southern and eastern China and are protected as national or provincial scenic areas. Individual components differ in scale and accessibility, with some offering extensive trail networks and others limited to viewing platforms.

The serial sites sit in mountainous and hilly terrain across multiple provinces; access is by regional roads and local transport from nearby towns and cities, varying by component site.

  • Viewing tips: The Danxia landform is best seen from established viewing platforms and short protected trails that limit erosion and protect fragile sandstone cliffs.
