Bo Hanging Coffins Travel Guide

One of the most mysterious and intriguing sights in this region of the world, the Bo Hanging Coffins are a major pilgrimage site for Chinese people and international visitors alike.

These hanging coffins were constructed from one whole piece of wood and mounted on a beam from a rock face inside a cave. The Bo people lived in this district for several centuries but their civilization really flourished from 1100 to 256 BC. The Bo people buried their dead in hanging coffins, which they placed high on rocks.

Visitors to the Bo Hanging Coffins will be impressed by the sheer number of coffins here and also how well preserved the coffins are. While some coffins rest on wooden posts jutting out from the cliff side, others rest in niches cut into the rock. There are also murals surrounding the coffins which show the Bo people’s love of art.

There are 250 coffins to see in this area. Unfortunately, most of the original Bo village has been destroyed. However, this is a good spot for camping and those with their own tents will have no problems finding a spot. There are several local buses that pass by to take visitors to nearby towns and villages where there is accommodation available.

Getting There & Away

The Bo village is located in Southern Sichuan. The easiest way to get here is by flying into the international airport at Chengdu and then taking a bus (10 hours). Chengdu International Airport has links with Beijing (2 hours, 20 minutes), Hong Kong, Macau, Seoul, Bangkok and Singapore.
