Chimanimani Mountains
Mountains Border mountain range between Zimbabwe and Mozambique
A mountain chain straddling the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border with granite peaks and ridges. Walkers and climbers explore footpaths, campsites and biodiversity within Chimanimani National Park.
The Chimanimani Mountains are a compact mountain massif on the Mozambique-Zimbabwe border, made up of rugged granite peaks, escarpments and deep valleys.
The range includes highland grasslands, montane forest and numerous waterfalls; it is a popular area for hiking, rock scrambling and nature tourism and contains Mozambique’s highest point, Monte Binga.
Local communities have long used the mountains for grazing and resource gathering and parts of the massif have since been designated protected areas on both sides of the border to conserve its ecosystems and waterways.
Geographically the Chimanimani massif straddles eastern Zimbabwe (Manicaland province) and western Mozambique (Manica province), with the settlement of Chimanimani on the Zimbabwean side and the massif forming a prominent borderland landscape.
- Outdoor activities: The range supports steep granite ridges, waterfalls and highland grasslands and is known for remote trekking routes and rock climbing.
- Access season: The dry season typically provides the most reliable access for hiking and routefinding; weather becomes much wetter and more hazardous in the rainy season.
What to See #
- Monte Binga: The highest summit in the range, Monte Binga rises to 2,436 metres and is the highest point in Mozambique; it is a focal objective for mountaineers crossing the border.
- Chimanimani National Park (Zimbabwe): A protected area in Zimbabwe established around the core massif that conserves montane forest, grasslands and granite peaks and offers marked trails and camping for trekkers.
- Chimanimani National Reserve (Mozambique): A Mozambican reserve that protects the western slopes and river catchments of the Chimanimani massif and links conservation across the international boundary.
