Far North - Atacama Desert & Coastal Desert (Arica to Copiapó)

Autumn again delivers crisp desert mornings and reliably sunny afternoons as the intense summer heat ebbs; stargazing is superb and tour operators around San Pedro run full schedules for observatory trips and nighttime salt‑flat visits. Coastal fogs are less persistent than in winter, improving visibility for boat trips and coastal walks. The shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices, but nights are already turning cold at altitude.

Central Chile - Santiago, Valparaíso, Casablanca & Wine Country

Autumn rains begin to creep back by late April into May, and evenings cool down considerably - excellent months for indoor cultural attractions in Santiago and quieter gastronomic tours in Valparaíso. The vineyards enter their quieter phase after harvest, giving travelers a more relaxed tasting experience and photographers great low‑angle light. Bring waterproofs for occasional fronts and warm layers for chilly nights, especially inland.

Andean Highlands & Ski Areas (Portillo, Valle Nevado, Farellones, Elqui highlands)

Winter returns with persistent snow at ski elevations and occasional snowfalls at higher passes - road access to resorts should be checked for closures and chains in the heaviest storms. Cold, clear mornings followed by compacted snow underfoot create great conditions for skiers; pack appropriate mountain clothing and be conscious of altitude effects. Rescue services and marked routes operate on main resorts, but backcountry travel requires experience and local guidance.

Lake District & Chiloé (Puerto Varas, Pucón, Chiloe Island)

High summer features long days and reliable outdoor conditions on clearer years; festivals and cultural events return to towns around the lakes and cable cars run regularly for summit viewpoints. Be ready for local and national holiday crowds in January-February, and reserve boats for Chiloe crossings early. Nights can remain cool near the water so a thin insulating layer is useful.

Aysén & Carretera Austral (Coyhaique, Puerto Río Tranquilo, Queulat)

Late summer into early autumn offers similar advantages to midsummer but with slightly cooler nights and fewer tourists; rivers are often lower and hiking conditions excellent. This is a favorite time for photographers seeking dramatic light and empty trails, but always keep a contingency for sudden ferry or road changes. A good waterproof and sturdy, mud‑ready footwear are indispensable.

Southern Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia/Tierra del Fuego borderlands)

Late summer keeps favorable conditions for the most part, but isolated storms can still arrive and some services begin to wind down after February. The region slows in March, offering photographers and trekkers more solitude while the weather is still generally cooperative. Book lifts and boat tours in advance if you need certainty, and always leave room in your itinerary for one or two rest days to wait out bad weather.

Rapa Nui / Easter Island (Hanga Roa and island interior)

Mid‑summer retains warmth and sun with more frequent rainbursts; the island’s cultural calendar and visitor services are at full tilt, so reserve tours and boat trips in advance. Interior roads can be wet and dusty depending on recent rains, so closed‑toe shoes are useful for archaeology trails. Evenings feel balmy and are excellent for outdoor dining or cultural performances in Hanga Roa.
