High / low are average daily temperatures (°C). “Feels” reflects how hot or cold it feels, allowing for humidity.
Far North - Atacama Desert & Coastal Desert (Arica to Copiapó)
Mild, dry conditions continue into late autumn with warm days and much cooler nights - it’s a fine time to visit archaeological sites and coastal ports like Iquique without the height of summer crowds. The deserts’ clarity is ideal for photography around the salt flats and geoglyphs, and road access to many high‑altitude lagoons remains good before winter rains. Expect early morning chill at elevations and carry sun and wind protection for exposed desert trails.
Central Chile - Santiago, Valparaíso, Casablanca & Wine Country
Autumn colors start to show in cooler mornings while days remain agreeable - a good time for hiking the nearby coastal hills and visiting the Andes foothills outside Santiago. Wine harvests are in full swing in March-April; visiting wineries around Casablanca or Maipo is rewarding, with fewer crowds than peak summer. Bring a light jacket for evenings - temperatures drop noticeably after sunset and rains can begin by late April on cooler years.
Andean Highlands & Ski Areas (Portillo, Valle Nevado, Farellones, Elqui highlands)
Autumn cools the high plateaus and ridges; days are usually sunny and crisp while nights grow cold enough for frost at higher elevations. Ski centers are closed but lower‑altitude hiking remains rewarding with clearer skies and fewer insects; the Elqui Valley begins to feel pleasantly mild, drawing stargazers to towns like Vicuña. Pack warm sleepwear for mountain hostels and be mindful that high mountain roads can start to show early winter maintenance.
Lake District & Chiloé (Puerto Varas, Pucón, Chiloe Island)
Early autumn brings mellower temperatures and spectacular color in valley forests; Pucón’s thermal baths and hot springs feel particularly welcoming as evenings cool. Rain increases gradually - Chiloé reverts to its more persistent drizzle - but trails are quieter and lodges often have off‑season rates. Waterproof boots and quick‑dry clothing are wise as some mountain tracks can become muddy after rain.
Aysén & Carretera Austral (Coyhaique, Puerto Río Tranquilo, Queulat)
Early autumn begins to cool and the first sustained frontal systems creep in from the Pacific, turning some gravel roads muddier and increasing the chance of cancellations on small boat services. The colors of lenga and coihue forests become dramatic, and the region is quieter as day‑tour numbers fall. If you want to hike in fewer crowds, this shoulder season is appealing - but be prepared for rain and short daylight hours toward May.
Southern Patagonia & Tierra del Fuego (Torres del Paine, Puerto Natales, Punta Arenas, Ushuaia/Tierra del Fuego borderlands)
Early autumn brings cooler temperatures and fewer visitors; the first real storms that close trails in Torres del Paine start showing up by April, but many days are crisp and beautiful for photography. The shoulder season is attractive if you want solitude, though some tour operators reduce services and a few higher camps close. Visitors should expect shorter daylight, faster weather swings and pack for wet, windy conditions.
Rapa Nui / Easter Island (Hanga Roa and island interior)
Early autumn brings slightly cooler nights and fewer tropical downpours, improving conditions for walking the volcanic craters like Rano Raraku and the coastal sites at Ahu Tongariki. Hanga Roa is less crowded than mainland Chile’s summer rush and service levels remain high, making this a comfortable shoulder season. A light waterproof and a mid‑layer will cover most conditions on island hikes.
