The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a large white marble monument and cultural complex in central Taipei, opened in 1980 to commemorate the life of Chiang Kai-shek. The memorial is set within an expansive plaza framed by the National Theater and National Concert Hall.

Visitors commonly see the central statue of Chiang Kai-shek inside the hall, the ornate interior architecture, and the broad Liberty Square used for demonstrations, ceremonies and public events. The complex also hosts exhibitions on modern Taiwanese history and regular cultural programming.

The memorial was constructed following Chiang Kai-shek’s death and was intended as a national monument and public space; the site’s function and symbolism have evolved as public uses and commemorations changed over time. The surrounding performance halls were built as part of the same cultural complex.

The memorial sits in Taipei’s Zhongzheng District in the city center, a short distance from major transit hubs and government buildings.

  • Opening date: The memorial complex opened in 1980 as a national monument dedicated to Chiang Kai-shek.
  • Changing of the guard: A ceremonial changing of the guard takes place at the statue inside the Memorial Hall and is timed for visitors.

Tips for Visiting Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall #

  • Visit first thing in the morning to enjoy the memorial and Liberty Square with softer light and far fewer people than midday, when tour groups and public events fill the plaza.
  • Watch the ceremonial guard change at the main hall (it's a regular scheduled ceremony) and check the official site or visitor center for exact times so you can plan around it.
  • Don't skip the flanking buildings - the National Concert Hall and National Theater often have exhibitions or performances and are architecturally significant; include a walk around the whole square rather than only the main memorial steps.
