The Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall is a large white marble monument and cultural complex in central Taipei, opened in 1980 to commemorate the life of Chiang Kai-shek. The memorial is set within an expansive plaza framed by the National Theater and National Concert Hall.
Visitors commonly see the central statue of Chiang Kai-shek inside the hall, the ornate interior architecture, and the broad Liberty Square used for demonstrations, ceremonies and public events. The complex also hosts exhibitions on modern Taiwanese history and regular cultural programming.
The memorial was constructed following Chiang Kai-shek’s death and was intended as a national monument and public space; the site’s function and symbolism have evolved as public uses and commemorations changed over time. The surrounding performance halls were built as part of the same cultural complex.
The memorial sits in Taipei’s Zhongzheng District in the city center, a short distance from major transit hubs and government buildings.
