Island Island off Tunisia's coast, part of Kerkennah archipelago
Chergui is the eastern island of the Kerkennah archipelago off the east coast of Tunisia in Sfax Governorate. It is one of the pair of low-lying islands that make up Kerkennah and is primarily a fishing and agricultural community.
The island offers sandy shorelines, small fishing villages, palm groves and a slow-paced island environment rather than large tourist infrastructure. Roads are narrow and mostly unpaved, and the local economy centers on fishing, small-scale farming and date palms.
Kerkennah has a long history as a maritime and fishing area in the central Mediterranean; the islands have served local fishing communities and small-scale trade for centuries. Traditional life on Chergui has changed gradually with modern transport and seasonal tourism.
Chergui lies off the east coast of Tunisia opposite the city of Sfax and forms the eastern half of the Kerkennah group. The landscape is flat and maritime, exposed to Mediterranean weather and sea breezes.
