Chautauqua Lake

Chautauqua Lake is a freshwater lake in Chautauqua County, southwestern New York State, and forms the setting for the long-running Chautauqua Institution at its north end. The lake and its shore communities are a regional center for summer recreation and cultural programming.

The lake supports boating, fishing, beaches and waterside villages; small marinas, public launches and seasonal services concentrate activity in summer months. The Chautauqua Institution brings additional cultural tourism with scheduled lectures, music and educational programs during its summer season.

Glacial processes created the lake basin and shore settlement grew in the 19th century; the Chautauqua Institution was established in 1874 and has defined the lake’s cultural role since then. Local towns developed around transportation links and summer tourism throughout the 20th century.

Situated in southwestern New York, the lake lies within Chautauqua County and is served by nearby towns such as Jamestown for regional access. The landscape around the lake is a mix of wooded shorelines, small villages and low hills.
