Chatkal Range
Mountains Mountain range in Central Asia with alpine landscapes
The Chatkal Range straddles the Kyrgyz‑Uzbek border with alpine valleys, rivers and steep ridges; trekkers and climbers use its trails to reach remote pastures and glacier‑fed streams.
The Chatkal Range is a mountain chain in the western part of the Tian Shan system, predominantly within present-day Kyrgyzstan. It forms part of the complex alpine topography of Central Asia and contains glaciated and high-relief valleys.
The range contains steep river valleys that feed tributaries of regional river systems and offers terrain used for trekking, mountaineering and alpine pasture. Snow and permanent ice occur at higher elevations, with pronounced seasonal runoff in spring and summer.
The mountains are the result of the same tectonic uplift that formed the wider Tian Shan during the Cenozoic era, producing folded and faulted crystalline rocks and high ridges. Local communities have long used lower slopes for summer grazing and access to mountain resources.
Geographically the Chatkal Range lies in western Kyrgyzstan and forms part of the borderlands of the western Tian Shan, with valleys that link into broader Central Asian river systems and to adjacent ranges and foothills.
