Château de Monte-Cristo

The Château de Monte-Cristo is the mid-19th-century house built by the novelist Alexandre Dumas in Port-Marly, Île-de-France, created as both a residence and a showpiece reflecting his literary success. It is now preserved as a museum devoted to Dumas and his works.

A small, ornate villa and landscaped grounds containing Dumas’ study and collections, arranged to reflect the author’s tastes and the era when it was built. Exhibits present manuscripts, objects, and displays about Dumas’ life and writings.

Commissioned and built by Alexandre Dumas during the 1840s and 1850s as a personal retreat, the property was decorated and furnished by the author. After periods of change in ownership it has been restored and converted into a museum focused on Dumas’ life and literary production.

Situated in Port-Marly on the left bank of the Seine in the western suburbs of Paris, the property lies within the Yvelines department and is reached from nearby towns and from Paris by regional transport.
