The Petit Trianon is a small neoclassical château set within the park of the Palace of Versailles and created in the 1760s as an intimate royal retreat. It is closely associated with Marie-Antoinette, who used it as a private residence from the 1770s.

Visitors explore the compact château interiors and the surrounding English-style landscaped garden, which were intended to provide a contrast to court life at the main palace. Adjacent to the Petit Trianon is the curated rustic Queen’s Hamlet, a collection of farm buildings and cottages designed as a model rural estate.

Built to designs by Ange-Jacques Gabriel between 1762 and 1768, the building and grounds were part of a broader program of 18th-century royal landscaping and taste for smaller, private retreats. The site later underwent restoration and is interpreted for the public as an example of late-18th-century court life.

The Petit Trianon lies within the larger Versailles park, about 20 kilometres southwest of Paris, and is typically visited together with the Palace and gardens under combined visitor arrangements.

• Queen’s Hamlet: The nearby rustic Queen’s Hamlet - a late-18th-century model farm and collection of cottages built for Marie-Antoinette as a pastoral retreat - lies close to the Petit Trianon within the Versailles grounds.

Petit Trianon is inside the Park of the Palace of Versailles. From Paris take the RER C to Versailles-Château-Rive Gauche station, then walk through the palace grounds-expect roughly a 20-30 minute walk across the gardens from the palace toward the Petit Trianon and the Queen’s Hamlet. By car from Paris follow the A13 toward Versailles (around 20-25 km depending on your start point) and use the parking areas around the palace complex.

• Enter the Versailles grounds early and head straight to the Petit Trianon before the palace crowds arrive; the late afternoon light also makes the gardens and the Queen's Hamlet especially pleasant.
• Approach via the Grand Trianon side or use the park's little train/shuttle to cut the long walk from the main palace entrance; interior access often requires a separate timed ticket, so book in advance.
• Include the nearby Queen's Hamlet in your visit - its rustic buildings and ponds are commonly overlooked by visitors who focus only on the formal gardens.
