Château d'Angers

Château d’Angers is a large medieval fortress in the city of Angers in western France, noted for its massive curtain walls and series of round defensive towers. The present castle complex dates mainly to the 13th century and is a central historic monument of the city.

The fortress is defined by its long curtain walls pierced by 17 towers and an inner castle court; visitors commonly walk the ramparts and examine the defensive architecture up close. Housed within the castle is the famous medieval Apocalypse Tapestry, an extensive 14th-century woven cycle that depicts scenes from the Book of Revelation.

The castle was originally developed as a ducal and royal stronghold and later adapted for administrative and museological uses; the tapestry was acquired and displayed there in the modern era. Conservation work over the 19th and 20th centuries has kept the ramparts and key interior spaces accessible to the public.

The château sits on the north bank of the Maine River within the urban area of Angers, in the Pays de la Loire region; it overlooks the city centre and is a short walk from central Angers transport links.
