Château d'Amboise
Historical Site Royal château overlooking Loire, royal burial site
A Loire Valley royal château above the river, Château d’Amboise offers Renaissance rooms, formal terraces and town views; visitors combine it with Clos Lucé, associated with Leonardo da Vinci.
Château d’Amboise is a royal château overlooking the Loire River in the town of Amboise, in the Centre-Val de Loire region of France. The site contains substantial late medieval and Renaissance fabric and was an important royal residence during the 15th and 16th centuries.
Visitors experience terraces, fortified walls and formal gardens with panoramic views over the Loire and the town. The site includes the small chapel of Saint-Hubert, historically linked with Leonardo da Vinci, who lived nearby at the Clos Lucé in his final years.
The château developed from earlier medieval fortifications and was transformed into a royal palace under monarchs such as Charles VIII and later François I, who carried out Renaissance-era works and expansions. Over subsequent centuries parts of the complex were altered or demolished, and preservation and restoration have shaped the present appearance.
Château d’Amboise sits on a limestone promontory above the Loire in the town of Amboise, approximately 25 kilometres east of Tours in Indre-et-Loire. The site is accessible by road and local trains that serve the Loire Valley tourist circuit.

- Location Tip: The castle occupies a promontory overlooking the Loire and is a short walk from the centre of the town of Amboise, making it a common day visit from Tours and the Loire Valley.
