Château de Chenonceau is a 16th-century French château in the Loire Valley that spans the River Cher with an arched gallery. It is renowned for its architecture, riverside setting and historic ownership by several notable Renaissance figures.

Visitors explore the long gallery over the river, state rooms, period furnishings and formal gardens that extend to the riverbanks. The château’s layout and decorative interiors reflect Renaissance tastes and subsequent 17th- and 18th-century changes.

The site originated on medieval foundations and was rebuilt and extended in the early 1500s; it became associated with families and figures such as Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de’ Medici who influenced its gardens and interiors. The château has been preserved as a major historic house museum since the 19th century.

Chenonceau stands in the commune of Chenonceaux in the Indre-et-Loire department, roughly 25 kilometres southeast of Tours and within the Loire Valley region, surrounded by parkland and formal gardens.

Château de Chenonceau is in the village of Chenonceaux in the Loire Valley. By car it’s about a 25-35 minute drive east from Tours (roughly 25-30 km depending on route); follow local departmental roads into Chenonceaux and park in the visitor car parks. There is also a regional TER train service to the village (Chenonceaux/Chenonceaux area) from Tours/Amboise in the regional rail network and the station is a short walk (typically 10-15 minutes) from the château.

• Arrive at opening or late afternoon to avoid the mid-day coach and river-cruise crowds-early morning gives the calmest experience in the galleries and gardens.
• Buy a timed ticket online to skip long queues at the main entrance by the bridge; once inside, head straight to the long gallery that spans the river, which is the château's most atmospheric interior space.
• Don't miss both riverside gardens (Diane de Poitiers' and Catherine de' Medici's) and the lower terraces-many visitors concentrate on the rooms and skip the distinct gardens on either bank of the Cher.
