How to Get to Charmey#
Charmey (Gruyère) is reached most easily via Swiss rail to Bulle and a short PostBus ride, or by road from major airports in Geneva or Bern. Trains and local buses are reliable; allow time for at least one change when coming from international airports.
Geneva Airport (GVA): Geneva is the closest major international airport with frequent trains to Lausanne and then regional connections to Bulle; total rail travel to Charmey (via Bulle) is about 1h45-2h15 by train + bus. Expect single-ticket rail fares Geneva-Bulle from roughly CHF 30-50; the PostBus from Bulle to Charmey is a short local-leg (see card 2).
Bern Airport / Belp (BRN): Bern-Belp is closer by distance and can be useful if you find flights there. Rail from Bern to Bulle takes about 1h-1h30 with a change; combined rail+bus to Charmey typically runs 1h30-2h. Taxis or private transfers from Belp into Gruyère are available and will be significantly more expensive than rail (expect ~CHF 120-180 for a private transfer).
Train: The regional rail hub for Charmey is Bulle (served by Swiss Federal Railways / SBB and Transports publics fribourgeois). From major Swiss cities you typically change at Bulle; Geneva-Bulle and Bern-Bulle both require one or two changes. Journey times: Geneva-Bulle ~1h45-2h, Bern-Bulle ~1h-1h30.
Bus: Local PostBus (PostAuto) routes link Bulle with Charmey (and the ski lifts / spa area). The Bulle-Charmey bus run is short (around 20-30 minutes). Regional bus services also connect from Gruyères and neighbouring valleys; check SBB/PostAuto timetables for exact departures and combined ticket options.
How to Get Around Charmey#
The best way to reach and move around Charmey is rail to Bulle followed by the local PostBus, combined with walking or short taxi rides locally. Renting a car gives flexibility for exploring the wider Gruyère region, but public transport is reliable and well integrated.
- SBB / Regional trains (CHF 20-50) - SBB and regional services to Bulle are the backbone for reaching Charmey. Trains from Bern, Lausanne or Geneva typically require one change; services are punctual and comfortable. Buy tickets on the SBB app or at stations - saver fares can reduce costs but check advance availability.
- PostBus (PostAuto) (CHF 3-10) - Local PostBus routes run the last leg from Bulle into Charmey and to ski lifts and hiking trailheads. Buses are frequent in high season and less so in low season; validate tickets on board or use integrated SBB tickets. Useful timetable coordination with arriving trains is recommended.
- Car / Rental (CHF 60-120/day (rental)) - Driving gives the most flexibility for exploring the surrounding Gruyère countryside and mountain roads. Roads are well maintained but can be snowy in winter - winter tyres/chains may be required. Parking in Charmey is generally straightforward near hotels and lifts.
- Taxi / Private transfer (CHF 120-250) - Taxis and private transfers from Geneva, Bern or Lausanne are available and save time when carrying luggage or travelling off-peak. They are noticeably more expensive than public transport; pre-booking is recommended for airport pickups. Good for direct door-to-door service.
- Bicycle (CHF 25-60/day) - The valley and nearby roads are popular with cyclists in summer; electric-assist bikes make climbs far easier. Expect mixed paved and minor roads; local rental shops may rent e-bikes seasonally.
- Walking - Charmey is compact and very walkable: the spa, village centre and base lifts are within easy walking distance. Trails start from town for short hikes and longer routes into the surrounding hills.
