Lake Neuchâtel Lake

Lake Neuchâtel is a major freshwater lake in western Switzerland and the largest lake entirely within Swiss territory. The lake forms an important regional hub for transport, recreation and lakeside towns.

Lakeside towns and promenades, sailing and other non-motorised water sports, and cycle routes along the shore are popular activities. Several towns on the lake offer historic centres, castle sites and spa facilities, making the shoreline a mix of cultural and outdoor attractions.

Towns around the lake have medieval origins and the lake has long supported transport, fishing and agricultural activities in the surrounding lowland. Over time the shoreline settlements developed into regional administrative and market centres.

The lake lies in western Switzerland, bordered by the cantons of Neuchâtel, Vaud, Fribourg and Bern, with the city of Neuchâtel on its northwestern shore.

• Neuchâtel: The city of Neuchâtel sits on the lake’s northwestern shore and serves as the region’s cultural and administrative centre with a lakeside promenade and historic castle.
• Yverdon-les-Bains: Yverdon-les-Bains on the southwestern shore is known for thermal springs and a restored medieval castle overlooking the lake.
• Estavayer-le-Lac: Estavayer-le-Lac lies on the southern shore and retains a historic lakeside medieval quarter and harbour area popular with visitors.

Lake Neuchâtel is served by Swiss Federal Railways (SBB): trains stop at Neuchâtel and Yverdon-les-Bains stations on the lake shore. From Neuchâtel railway station the lakefront and harbour are a short walk (typically 300-500 m). The A1 motorway runs along the southern side of the lake with exits for Neuchâtel and Yverdon, making the lake easily reachable by car from Lausanne, Bern and other regional centres.

• Cycle the well-marked lakeside route (the popular 'tour du lac') to visit several towns and natural spots in one day; stages link easily with regional trains so you can do the loop in sections.
• Take regional boat services in summer to reach lakeside towns such as Estavayer-le-Lac and Yverdon-les-Bains - the timetables are seasonal, so check the summer schedule before planning.
