Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum

The Chapin Mesa Archeological Museum is a National Park Service museum located on Chapin Mesa within Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado, interpreting the archaeology of the Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) sites in the park. The museum presents artifacts and explanatory exhibits intended to introduce visitors to the park’s cliff dwellings and cultural history.

Exhibits include pottery, tools and interpretive displays that illustrate daily life, technology and ceremonial features of Ancestral Puebloan communities; a diorama and park film provide additional orientation for visitors planning to visit Cliff Palace and other ruins. The museum is a primary starting point for visitors exploring the Chapin Mesa area and nearby archaeological sites.

The building was erected in the early 20th century as part of the National Park Service’s efforts to preserve and interpret Mesa Verde’s archaeological resources, and it has served park visitors as an interpretive center since that period. Collections and exhibits have been curated and updated to reflect ongoing scholarship and conservation practices.

It is located on Chapin Mesa within Mesa Verde National Park, on the mesa overlooking Spruce Canyon and the park’s concentration of cliff dwellings; the park itself lies southwest of Cortez, Colorado.
