Changu Narayan Temple

Changu Narayan Temple is a Hindu temple complex dedicated to Lord Vishnu located on a wooded hill near Bhaktapur in the Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. It is regarded as one of the oldest temple sites in the country and is part of the Kathmandu Valley UNESCO World Heritage area.

The complex features a principal pagoda‑style shrine surrounded by smaller shrines and a series of stone sculptures and carved reliefs. Notable elements include finely carved wooden struts, metalwork and stone inscriptions that display ancient iconography and serve as important examples of Nepalese religious art. The hilltop setting provides views over the surrounding valley and the medieval town of Bhaktapur.

The temple site has an extended history with inscriptions and sculptural evidence indicating its significance from early historic periods; the structure has undergone rebuilding and enlargement over centuries while remaining a major religious centre for the region. Successive rulers and local patrons contributed carvings and dedications that remain in the complex.
