Changdeokgung Palace Complex
Historical Site Joseon-era royal palace with famous secret garden
Adjacent to other Joseon palaces, Changdeokgung is prized for its rear garden-Huwon-where guided walks reveal landscaped ponds, pavilions and shaded paths; the palace complex displays traditional royal architecture.
Changdeokgung Palace Complex is a major Joseon dynasty palace in Seoul, constructed in 1405 and recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its example of harmonious integration between built structures and the natural landscape. The complex served as a principal royal residence for many Joseon kings and is renowned for its garden design.
The site’s highlight is the Huwon or Secret Garden, a large landscaped royal garden of ponds, pavilions and tree-lined walks laid out to follow the existing topography rather than imposing a rigid geometric plan. The garden and palace buildings are noted for elegant wooden architecture and a design philosophy that privileges natural scenery.
Changdeokgung was built in the early 15th century and subsequently extended and repaired over the Joseon period; it retained particular importance as a residential palace even when other palaces fulfilled official state functions. The complex was damaged during periods of war and occupation and has been the subject of careful restoration.
The palace sits in central Seoul’s Jongno district, immediately east of Gyeongbokgung and within the historic core of the city, accessible by road and public transport.
- Huwon access: Access to the Secret Garden (Huwon) is often restricted to guided tours with limited daily places, so booking in advance is recommended during busy seasons.
What to See #
- Huwon (Secret Garden): Huwon (the Secret Garden) - a private royal garden laid out with pavilions, ponds and wooded walks covering roughly 78 acres and historically used for relaxation by the royal family.
- Primary halls and gates: Injeongjeon and Donhwamun - principal ceremonial buildings and the main entrance gate that form the formal axis of the palace complex.
- Residential quarters and service buildings: A series of residential and administrative buildings used by the royal household during the Joseon period, sited to integrate with the surrounding hillside and natural contours.

Tips for Visiting Changdeokgung Palace Complex #
- Book a slot for the Secret Garden (Huwon) tour in advance and plan your visit around that guided time-Huwon has limited capacity and is the part most visitors regret missing.
- Enter via Donhwamun (the palace's main gate) or the nearby Anguk/Changdeokgung area to arrive at the principal ticket office and visitor facilities with minimal navigation.
- Visit early in the day on weekdays to avoid large tour groups and to have quieter access to the palace halls and the garden paths.
- Take time to walk the quieter rear pavilions and small courtyards-many visitors concentrate on the main throne halls and miss the intimate landscaped areas that show the site's design principles.
