Cévennes National Park is a protected area in south-central France covering parts of the Cévennes mountain range in the Massif Central. The park was established in 1970 to conserve a mix of Mediterranean and mountain habitats and traditional agricultural landscapes.

Visitors come for extensive hiking routes, panoramic mountain viewpoints, river gorges, and cultural features linked to shepherding and small-scale pastoralism. Mont Aigoual, with its meteorological observatory at 1,567 metres, is a prominent vantage point within the park.

The park protects chestnut groves, limestone plateaus, and steep valleys that support diverse flora and fauna and longstanding human land use practices. The surrounding region is noted for its historic villages, pastoral terraces and seasonal transhumance.

Located in the southern part of the Massif Central, the park spans several departments and lies within the administrative region of Occitanie, occupying a mix of rugged upland terrain and river valleys.

What to See#

• Mont Aigoual: A mountain summit with an active meteorological observatory at 1,567 metres that provides panoramic views and hosts a small museum and weather station facilities.

• Use Florac or Le Vigan as entry towns for visitor information and maps-the Parc national des Cévennes has its main information points in and around Florac, which helps plan hikes and drives through the park.
• Visit in late spring or early autumn for cooler temperatures, fewer tourists and better chances to see traditional transhumance (seasonal grazing) activity; summer weekends can be noticeably busier on the main routes.
• Skip the busiest gorges and instead explore higher plateaus (for example around Mont Lozère) or smaller side valleys to avoid crowds and to experience the cultural landscape that earned the area its World Heritage status.
