Cetinje Monastery

Cetinje Monastery is an Orthodox monastic complex in the Old Royal Capital Cetinje, Montenegro, originally founded in the late 15th century. It is one of the town’s principal religious institutions and has long been central to Montenegrin ecclesiastical life.

The site comprises a church and monastic buildings and contains historic religious objects and icons that reflect its role as a regional spiritual centre. The complex remains an active monastery and is visited for both worship and its cultural collections.

The original foundation is attributed to Ivan Crnojević in the late 1400s; the monastery has been rebuilt and modified several times following destructions and renovations over the centuries. It has served continuously as a religious and administrative centre for the local Orthodox hierarchy.

The monastery is located within the town of Cetinje in central-southern Montenegro, historically the country’s royal and ecclesiastical capital, near the slopes of Mount Lovćen.
