Cēsis Castle

Cēsis Castle is a well-preserved medieval castle complex in the town of Cēsis in northern Latvia, originally established by the Livonian Order in the 13th century. The ruins include stone walls, towers and vaulted chambers from the medieval fortress alongside a later manor house.

The site is managed as a heritage attraction and museum with restored walkways and interior rooms that illustrate the castle’s military and domestic functions. Visitors can access towers and courtyards and see archaeological displays related to the site’s long history.

The castle saw major construction in the 13th and 14th centuries under the Livonian Order and experienced damage and rebuilding in subsequent centuries; parts were adapted for residential use in the early modern period. Today it forms a central historic landmark in the town of Cēsis.

Geographically the castle occupies a hill above the town centre in Cēsis Municipality, in the Vidzeme region of northern Latvia.
