Cerro Negro
Volcano Active cinder cone volcano with frequent eruptions
Near León, Cerro Negro is an active cinder cone popular with hikers and volcano‑boarding visitors; local guides run day trips on the volcanic slopes.
Cerro Negro is a young cinder cone volcano in León Department, western Nicaragua, notable as one of the youngest volcanoes in Central America and reaching roughly 728 metres in elevation.
The volcano offers a steep hike to the crater rim and downhill descents across loose volcanic ash and tephra, an activity commonly called volcano boarding. The cone and its dark flanks form a distinct contrast with surrounding agricultural lowlands and draw day-trip visitors from nearby León.
The cone formed in the mid-19th century with the first recorded eruptions in that period, and it has erupted intermittently since then. Its geologically recent origin and frequent eruptive history make it a classic example of a basaltic cinder cone.
Sited in León Department in western Nicaragua, it lies near the city of León and is accessible by road from that city and other local towns.
- Elevation: About 728 metres above sea level, with a crater you can reach on foot.
- Activities: A popular site for volcano boarding and short crater hikes, often combined with visits to the colonial city of León.
Tips for Visiting Cerro Negro #
- Base yourself in the city of León and book a volcano-boarding or hiking operator there rather than trying to improvise access-local guides know the safest routes and vehicle options for the dirt road up to the cone.
- Start very early in the day (pre-sunrise if possible) to avoid the midday heat on the black ash slopes and to get clearer views of the surrounding volcanic landscape; afternoon visits are hotter and more likely to see clouds.
- Avoid the rainy season (typically May-October) when the loose ash becomes slippery and descent activities are generally canceled; confirm conditions with your operator on the morning of your trip.
