Cerro de la Muerte

Mountain High mountain pass in Costa Rica, notorious for cold

Cerro de la Muerte marks one of Costa Rica’s high mountain passes on the Pan-American route; travelers stop for cloud-forest hikes, birdwatching and to experience cooler temperatures on the road between San José and the southern valleys.

Main image

Cerro de la Muerte is a high mountain in Costa Rica’s Talamanca range located in San José Province, known historically for its difficult crossing and cold, exposed conditions. It is one of the highest road-accessible peaks in the country and is notable for its high-elevation páramo and montane ecosystems.

The mountain’s slopes are characterised by paramo and cloud-forest vegetation and alpine scrub above the tree line; hikers and naturalists go there for high-elevation flora, birdwatching and wide mountain vistas. Several trails and viewpoints along the road crossing the summit provide opportunities to see endemic and highland species and to experience the distinctive páramo landscape.

Historically the route over Cerro de la Muerte was notorious for being hazardous to foot and mule traffic, giving the peak its name. Today the summit is crossed by the main interprovincial road, and visitor infrastructure is limited to roadside pullouts and trailheads rather than staffed facilities.

Geographically the mountain stands in the central highlands of Costa Rica in San José Province and forms part of the eastern edge of the Talamanca massif; it lies southeast of the capital, San José, and is reached by the main highway that runs toward the southern Pacific and Talamanca regions.

  • Elevation and highway: Elevation reaches roughly 3,400 metres, making it the highest point on Costa Rica's Inter-American (Pan-American) Highway.
  • Visit timing: Weather can change rapidly and temperatures can drop close to freezing; clear mornings after cold fronts give the best long-distance views.
