Cerro Chirripó is the highest mountain in Costa Rica, rising to roughly 3,820 metres above sea level. It forms part of the Talamanca Range and is the destination for one of the country’s most popular high‑altitude hikes.
The ascent traverses multiple ecological zones from montane forest to alpine shrubland, with panoramic views on clear days toward both coasts. Climbs normally require an overnight on the mountain and permits or reservations as managed through the national park system.
The peak sits within Chirripó National Park in the Talamanca mountains, on the border of internal provincial divisions, and is accessed from the village of San Gerardo de Rivas on the mountain’s slopes.

How to Get to Cerro Chirripó #
Access to Cerro Chirripó is from the small mountain village of San Gerardo de Rivas (near San Isidro de El General). From San José take Route 2 south to San Isidro de El General (about 3-4 hours), then follow local roads to San Gerardo (approx. 30-45 minutes). Chirripó National Park requires registration at park ranger stations; overnight stays at the Crestones or Los Crestones refuges must be booked in advance through SINAC (Costa Rican National Parks). Hikers typically require one or two days to reach the summit depending on fitness and itinerary.
Tips for Visiting Cerro Chirripó #
- Reserve accommodation in San Gerardo de Rivas or in Chirripó National Park's ranger station well in advance during the high season (Dec-Apr).
- Start pre-dawn from the second ranger checkpoint to reach the summit around sunrise; bring warm layers - summit temperatures can fall below freezing.
- Acclimatize: the trail gains a lot of elevation rapidly; hikers who attempt the summit in one day should be fit and prepared.
