How to Get to Cerknica
Cerknica is well connected by road and rail to Ljubljana and the Croatian coast; both trains and buses serve the town. For visiting the intermittent Lake Cerknica and the surrounding karst landscape, a car is useful but public transport is adequate for most visitors.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana is the main airport to reach Cerknica. From LJU, drive or take a bus to Cerknica - by car it’s about 40-55 minutes depending on route; buses take a similar amount of time depending on connections.
Trieste (TRS) / Rijeka (RJK): Trieste and Rijeka are alternative cross-border options; from either city you can travel by bus or car into Slovenia and reach Cerknica in roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on origin and border crossings.
Train: Cerknica has a station on the Ljubljana-Rijeka line (station: Cerknica). Trains from Ljubljana take roughly 50-80 minutes depending on service and connections.
Bus: Buses between Ljubljana and Cerknica are frequent and may be more convenient depending on your schedule. Buses serve many small villages around Cerknica and are the best option for reaching nearby natural attractions and parks.
