Cerknica is well connected by road and rail to Ljubljana and the Croatian coast; both trains and buses serve the town. For visiting the intermittent Lake Cerknica and the surrounding karst landscape, a car is useful but public transport is adequate for most visitors.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana is the main airport to reach Cerknica. From LJU, drive or take a bus to Cerknica - by car it’s about 40-55 minutes depending on route; buses take a similar amount of time depending on connections.
Trieste (TRS) / Rijeka (RJK): Trieste and Rijeka are alternative cross-border options; from either city you can travel by bus or car into Slovenia and reach Cerknica in roughly 1-1.5 hours depending on origin and border crossings.
Train: Cerknica has a station on the Ljubljana-Rijeka line (station: Cerknica). Trains from Ljubljana take roughly 50-80 minutes depending on service and connections.
