Why Visit Central Macedonia #

Eat and bar-hop through Thessaloniki’s waterfront and Ladadika district where bougatsa, gyros and meze meet lively nightlife. Start at the White Tower, move through the waterfront promenade and finish with a slice of the city’s famously good street food.

Use Litochoro as your base for hikes on Mount Olympus - Greece’s mythic mountain with routes for daywalkers and mountaineers. Trails pass ancient fir forests and alpine meadows; aim for shoulder seasons to avoid heat and heavy summer crowds.

Halkidiki’s three peninsulas (Kassandra, Sithonia and Mount Athos’s northern view) offer contrasting beach moods: buzzing beach clubs, quiet coves and pine-backed bays. If you want fewer people, favor Sithonia’s coves and visit in May or September.

See the royal tombs at Vergina, where Philip II’s burial complex and its gold funeral wreaths offer rare, moving insights into Macedonian royalty. The museum’s preservation is exceptional; allow time to study the artifacts and the reconstructed tumulus.

Dion at Mount Olympus’s foot is an undervalued archaeological park with temples, mosaics and a riverside sanctuary that reveal Macedonian religious life. Combine the site with a crisp lunch in nearby Litochoro and a short Olympus trail.

Getting to & Around Central Macedonia #

Most visitors arrive via Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) or by train/coach to Thessaloniki railway and bus stations, which are the region’s main transport hubs. The Egnatia Odos (A2/E90) motorway gives fast road access across Central Macedonia and to Halkidiki beaches - many popular seaside resorts are under 1-2 hours from Thessaloniki.

Central Macedonia combines a major urban hub (Thessaloniki) with extensive coastal resorts on Halkidiki; public transit and rail concentrate on the Thessaloniki corridor while peninsulas and archaeological sites require road travel. Seasonal summer traffic to beaches is a defining travel factor.

  • Domestic Flights - Thessaloniki International Airport (SKG) is the main gateway to Central Macedonia with domestic and international services and good road links to the region’s towns. Smaller domestic flights are limited; most travellers use SKG or overland connections.
  • Trains - Hellenic Train services call at Thessaloniki station with intercity links toward Athens and regional services; suburban Proastiakos services connect nearby towns. Rail is a good option into Thessaloniki but does not serve every rural corner or the Halkidiki peninsulas.
  • Buses - KTEL intercity coaches provide extensive coverage across Central Macedonia and to Halkidiki; OASTH runs local buses in Thessaloniki with frequent urban routes. Expect heavy seasonal traffic to beach destinations on Halkidiki in summer.
  • Rental Car - Renting a car is useful for exploring Chalkidiki peninsulas, rural villages and archaeological sites; Egnatia Odos (A2) and other national roads link the region, but summer coastal congestion is common. Mountain roads inland can be narrow and slower.

Thessaloniki’s Upper Town and Ladadika neighbourhoods have hostels and small guesthouses that suit budget travellers and students. They’re practical for short city hops and festival weekends.

Mountain Huts & Refuges (Mount Olympus)
