The Church of Agios Dimitrios in Thessaloniki is an early Byzantine basilica dedicated to Saint Demetrios, the patron saint of the city. It is one of Thessaloniki’s principal religious monuments and is part of the group’s listing as Paleochristian and Byzantine Monuments of Thessaloniki.

The building contains a notable crypt and reliquary chamber where relics associated with Saint Demetrios are kept, and it preserves layers of Byzantine decoration, mosaics and fresco fragments. The church functions as an active place of worship and a destination for pilgrims and visitors interested in Byzantine art.

Originally founded in the early Byzantine period, the church has undergone multiple restorations and reconstructions over the centuries, particularly after the great fire of 1917 that damaged much of the city. From Thessaloniki Makedonia Airport the church is roughly 15-20 km by road (about 20-30 minutes by taxi or car depending on traffic); airport buses and city buses connect the airport to the city centre where short local bus rides or a walk will reach the church.

• Visit outside major liturgical services and outside the feast day of St. Demetrios (October 26) if you prefer a quieter experience; mornings just after opening and late afternoons tend to be least crowded.
• Enter through the main facade on Aghiou Dimitriou Street and make time to descend to the crypt and chapel areas - the lower‑level relics and early Christian mosaics are compact but often overlooked by visitors who only see the nave.
• If you want photographs of mosaics and icons without pilgrims in the frame, coordinate your visit between service times and ask at the door about brief quiet periods when guided groups are absent.
