Central Kalahari Game Reserve
Reservation Vast Botswana wildlife reserve in the Kalahari Desert
A vast reserve in central Botswana, the Central Kalahari Game Reserve hosts Kalahari dune landscapes and dry savanna; safaris focus on endemic wildlife, remote camps and guided bush excursions.
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is a very large protected area in central Botswana that preserves semi-arid Kalahari landscapes, seasonal pans, and wildlife adapted to arid conditions. It is one of Botswana’s major conservation areas and covers tens of thousands of square kilometres.
Wildlife includes species adapted to dry savanna and dune environments, and the reserve is known for wide-open landscapes, large red sand dunes, and seasonal concentrations of mammals around water sources. Visitor facilities are sparse, so most travel is by guided safari vehicles or small aircraft to remote camps.
The reserve was established to protect Kalahari ecosystems and the livelihoods of wildlife and has been the focus of conservation and land-use discussions over recent decades. Traditional hunting and pastoral uses have occurred historically in the broader Kalahari region.
The park sits well inland in central Botswana, surrounded by Kalahari desert plains and distant from major urban centres; access is by long overland routes or regional airstrips.
- Scale: One of the world's largest protected game reserves, covering tens of thousands of square kilometres of Kalahari semi-arid habitat
- Access: Remote with largely unpaved tracks and limited tourist infrastructure; most visitors travel with guided safaris or fly-in camps
What to See #
- Deception Valley: Deception Valley - a notable internal basin in the reserve known for its pans, short grassland and wildlife concentrations during the wet season.
How to Get to Central Kalahari Game Reserve #
The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is remote and accessed from Botswana’s main gateway towns. Most visitors travel by road in a 4x4 from Ghanzi or from Maun (the latter is a common air gateway) or by charter light aircraft to private airstrips inside the reserve operated by lodges. Expect long drives on unpaved roads; travel is usually arranged with a tour operator or lodge.
Tips for Visiting Central Kalahari Game Reserve #
- Travel in the dry season (roughly June-October) when wildlife concentrates at waterholes and visibility for game viewing is best; the wet season disperses animals and makes many tracks impassable.
- Book park permits, campsite/permit slots and any guided drives well before arrival-the reserve is vast and infrastructure is limited, so official permits and campsite reservations are required and often sell out in peak months.
- Use a high-clearance 4x4 and plan logistics (fuel range, spare tyre, vehicle recovery) because distances between services are large; most visitors who try self-drive underestimate the remoteness and need to rely on local guides for reliable wildlife sightings.
Best Time to Visit Central Kalahari Game Reserve #
The dry season (roughly May-October) is generally the best time to visit for concentrated wildlife sightings; the wet season brings heat, rain and lush scenery.
