Cycling in Central Asia
Central Asia has become one of the world’s great bicycle-touring destinations. The Pamir Highway in particular is a legendary pilgrimage for long-distance cyclists, who ride the Roof of the World between high passes, empty valleys, and remote villages where hospitality is boundless. The wider region offers everything from lakeside loops to Silk Road city-hopping and rugged mountain expeditions.
This is demanding riding: high altitude, big distances, rough surfaces, and sparse resupply reward the self-sufficient and well-prepared. But the combination of extraordinary landscapes, warm welcomes from herders and villagers, and the thrill of pedalling ancient trade routes has made Central Asia a rite of passage for adventurous cycle tourists. The main season runs from late spring to early autumn, when the high passes are open.
