Cefalù Cathedral is a 12th-century Norman cathedral on the northern coast of Sicily, begun under King Roger II and notable for its extensive Byzantine-style mosaics. It forms one of the principal medieval monuments in Cefalù and is included in a UNESCO World Heritage group of Norman-era churches.

Construction was begun under Norman rule in the early 12th century, traditionally dated to the reign of Roger II, as part of his program of ecclesiastical building in Sicily. Over subsequent centuries the cathedral received later additions and conservation work while preserving its medieval mosaics and Romanesque fabric.

The cathedral stands at the base of La Rocca overlooking the old town and beach of Cefalù on Sicily’s northern shore, roughly an hour’s drive east of Palermo by road.

• UNESCO group listing: Part of the UNESCO inscription ‘Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedral Churches of Cefalù and Monreale’ (inscribed 2015), recognised for its Norman architecture and Byzantine mosaics.
• Must-see viewpoint: The apse mosaic of Christ Pantokrator is the cathedral’s highlight and is best viewed from the nave centre where the mosaic dominates the eastern end of the church.

• Cloister and treasury: The cathedral shares a complex with cloistered spaces and later additions; the adjoining cloister and treasury hold religious objects and manuscripts from the collection.
• Façade and towers: Twin towers flank the western façade and are integral features of the Norman-Romanesque architecture visible from the town seafront.

Cefalù is accessible by train from Palermo (about 1 hour) and Messina. The cathedral is in the town centre, a short walk from Cefalù train station and the beach.

• Arrive early to see the Byzantine mosaics in quiet; the gold‑background Christ Pantocrator in the apse is best viewed from the nave centerline.
• Combine a cathedral visit with a walk up La Rocca for coastal views that contextualize the Norman conquest of the town.
• Check mass times - parts of the cathedral may be closed during services.
