Catacombe dei Cappuccini

The Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo are a historic burial complex in Palermo, Sicily, created by the local Capuchin friary and known for its large collection of preserved human remains and coffins. The catacombs contain mummified monks and members of Palermo society, displayed in galleries rather than buried underground.

Interior corridors contain hundreds of preserved bodies and skeletal remains arranged in robes or clothing and displayed in niche-like spaces and chambers. Distinct sections historically separated friars, laymen, women and children, and the complex includes chapels and display rooms with funerary items.

The catacombs originated as a Capuchin burial practice associated with the friary beginning several centuries ago and expanded over time to include local families who sought interment there. Initially intended for the friars, the site later accepted lay patrons and grew into a large ossuary complex.

The site sits within the city of Palermo on the island of Sicily and is accessed from urban streets near the friary that established the burial complex.
